What you should know about Barefootclients
This Tourism Week is my on-line commentary and discussion about tourism in South Africa. And, with too many years’ experience in the tourism industry and even more as a tourism writer, I’m more than qualified to say my say. Want to read a gentle, poignant novel about how an old man gets in touch with his emotions? Want to read the first ten pages of this unusual and beautiful story about an labourer on an oyster farm who cannot communicate with words? Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa offers her condolences to the families and friends of the eight people who have died in the fires and storms that have hit Cape Town and Knysna in the Western Cape. The DA’s Shadow Minister of Tourism, James Vos, has called on the government to put its energy into reviving the country’s budget resorts in order to stimulate domestic tourism. Are newly-elected councillors qualified to serve on tourism boards? With 2016’s municipal elections behind us, newly appointed councillors have begun taking their places on the boards of tourism bureaus around the country. The Cross Cape MTB route: weaving a new product into the fabric of society. How does one communicate with people with disabilities? What language should one use to write or talk about people with disabilities? Transformation The politicians have called down from on high and the command today is for transformation. It seems appropriate to me to start this new project just days before the World Summit in Jo’burg, although I’m not sure why. South Africa needs tourism, and tourism needs to grow. The lovely, gravelled, tree-lined Phantom Pass runs uphill from the Knysna Lagoon and over towards Rheenendal, where the Millwood Goldfields and Jubilee Creek lie sleepy under the deep evergreen of the Knysna Forests. Freelance writer & communicator for hire: specialist in tourism. Background in science, with a powerful ability to translate scientific concepts and jargon into language the lay public can understand. Sharon van Wyk is probably one of the few writers in the country (besides me) who calls a tourism spade a spade, and, like me, she has her detractors and her followers.
